The speciality of Chest Medicine deals with a gamut of diseases that involve the lungs, airways, mediastinum, pleura, diaphragm and the chest wall. Not only thoracic, but disorders that affect the breathing indirectly like neuromuscular disorders, sleep disorders are also part of the speciality. Outpatient and Inpatient services

Daily outpatient and round the clock inpatient services are available. Respiratory diseases such as obstructive airway disease (bronchial asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis), interstitial lung disease, pulmonary vasculitis (Wegener's granulomatosis, systemic lupus erythematosus etc), eosinophilic lung disease (Tropical eosinophilia, eosinophilic pneumonias), lung infections (bronchitis, pneumonia, tuberculosis), lung cancers, pleural diseases (pleural effusion empyemas, mesotheliomas) and chest well diseases (Kyphoscoliosis) are examples of diseases treated.

Emergency and intensive care services for respiratory failure

Emergency and intensive care services are available 24*7 for respiratory failure due to acute asthma, COPD exacerbation, pneumothorax, massive hemoptysis, chest wall trauma, severe pneumonias, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) etc. Emergency bronchoscopies for diagnostic (lavage, biopsies) and therapeutic purposes and routinely carried out in ICU via endotracheal or tracheostomy tubes.

Non invasive ventilation support (NIV)

NIV using CPAP and bilevel devices for COPD, neuromuscular disease with respiratory failure, sleep apnoea is offered by the department as part of inpatient and outpatient services. NIV for respiratory failure is given in the high dependency unit or ICU as part of treatment and for early weaning from the ventilator.
