The department of anesthesiology has a team of doctors including consultants, Operating Department Assistants , recovery room nurses. and technicians who together manage the fully equipped state -of- art operating theatres, postoperative recovery room beds, emergency and road ambulance services at the Lokpriya Hospital. Equipped with the latest and best monitoring and life support systems, all operating rooms have the facilities to carry out trans-esophageal echocardiography for real time assessment of anatomic and functional status of the heart while the surgery is in progress. Well –trained staff and availability of the latest technology makes this as one of the safest places to get an anesthesia.
The role of the anesthesiologist extends beyond the operating room. The anesthesiologist is responsible for the preoperative assessment of the patient, an evaluation process that carefully considers both the patient’s current state of health and the planned surgical procedure that allows anesthesiologists to make judgments about the safest anesthesia plan for each individual patient. The anesthesiologist is also responsible for the well being of the patient postoperatively while the patient emerges from the effects of anesthesia. They are often involved in the management of acute postoperative pain, as well as chronic and cancer pain.
The department of anesthesiology has successfully managed a wide range of complicated surgical cases, few hours old newborns, with equal ease and competence by a team of experienced and dedicated anesthesiologists. All patients scheduled for surgery or interventions to be monitored by anesthesiologists, are visited by anesthesiologists prior to the procedure for complete assessment and planning. In addition, the pre-anesthetic sessions are meant to answer queries that patients may have, and patients are also encouraged to participate in planning out the techniques that would best suit them. Patient comfort, pain relief and patient safety are accorded the top priority; relevant data is laboriously collected for every patient and is periodically analyzed to incorporate practices that would ensure constant improvement
The medical expertise of the anesthesiologists enables them to alleviate pain. Pain has been designated as the fifth vital sign. Acute and chronic pain management constitutes a priority for our department. Patients suffering from chronic pain have a host of invasive and non invasive techniques to treat this challenging problem. Also for these patients a multi specialty team exists to provide a cohesive approach to treatment. This includes a surgeon, neurologist, psychologist and physical therapist. Multiple options are available to cancer pain patients as well. Anesthesiologists are also responsible for taking care of critically ill patients in the Surgical ICU, Catheterization labs, and leading the Rapid Response team for any sick patients at any location in the hospital.
