The Department takes pride in imparting their knowledge and experience including recent advances in Pulmonary Care.

The speciality of Chest Medicine deals with a gamut of diseases that involve the lungs, airways, mediastinum, pleura, diaphragm and the chest wall. Not only thoracic, but disorders that affect the breathing indirectly like neuromuscular disorders, sleep disorders are also part of the speciality.

The burden of chest diseases is increasing with growing urbanization, pollution and due to harmful effects of smoking. The diseases that we encounter commonly in our population for which Chest Medicine services are required are Asthma, Bronchiectasis, Tuberculosis, Pneumonias, Chest traumas, Pneumothorax, Pleural effusions, Mediastinal lymph adenopathy, Lung cancer, Sleep disorders, Allergies, and Respiratory failure due to various causes.

The department of respiratory medicine caters to diagnosis and management of all respiratory diseases in outpatient, inpatients and intensive care settings.

Inpatient and emergency services for respiratory care are round the clock.

We believe this valuable resource improves the likelihood of survival for critically ill patients, provides appropriate supervision, and reduces complications due to medical errors or poorly performed procedures.

Outpatient and Inpatient services:

Daily outpatient and round the clock inpatient services are available. Respiratory diseases such as obstructive airway disease (bronchial asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis), interstitial lung disease, pulmonary vasculitis (Wegeners granulomatosis, systemic lupus erythemetosis etc), eosonophilic lung disease (Tropical eosinophilia, eosonophilic pneumonias), lung infections (bronchitis, pneumonia, tuberculosis), lung cancers, pleural diseases (pleural effusion empyemas, mesatheliomas) and chest well diseases (Kyphoscoliosis) are examples of diseases treated.

Emergency and intensive care services for respiratory failure.

Round the clock emergency and intensive care services are available for respiratory failure due to acute asthma, COPD exacerbation, pneumothorax, massive hemoptysis, chest wall trauma, severe pneumonias, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) etc. Team of trained staff including respiratory physicians and intensivist’s perform intubations, line insertions, chest tube insertions, and mechanical ventilation when necessary. Emergency bronchoscopies for diagnostic (lavage, biopsies) and therapeutic purposes and routinely carried out in ICU via endotracheal or tracheostomy tubes.

Non invasive ventilation support (NIV)

NIV using CPAP and bilevel devices for COPD, neuromuscular disease with respiratory failure, sleep apnoea is offered by the department as part of inpatient and outpatient services. NIV for respiratory failure is given in the high dependency unit or ICU as part of treatment and for early weaning from ventilator.
